Fallen Leaf Lake Vacation

Pauly and I are at Fallen Leaf Lake, a beautiful, quiet lake near Lake Tahoe, on the south side. It isn't really populated because there are no hotels, lodges, etc. You either rent or own a house here, or cabin, depending, and generally they stay in families for generations. My sister, Melinda, has been coming here since she was 16. She thinks she has only missed one summer!

We used to stay in a small, funky cabin down the road from where we are now, but as my nephew, Phineas got bigger, and Paul was added to the mix, it got too cramped. We now stay in a large, modern cabin right across from the lake with a killer view. There is nothing to do, really, except hike or play in the water..kayak, swim, ski, whatever. I guess that is the whole idea..every day we walk up to the falls and back, eat lunch at the store, and hang out on the dock. I read, and Paul and Phineas and Lucas swim. I swim, sometimes, with a wetsuit, swear to God, it is cold!

Melinda’s husband, Craig loves to cook. He and I generally trade off or share the dinner duties. The cabin has a cook’s kitchen, and the supermarket in town, Raley’s, now carries organic produce, gourmet meats, fish, bakery, etc, so if I have the inclination, there is no stopping me. Last year I made a triple berry cream 4 layer cake for Paul’s birthday. It rivaled Sweet Lady Jane’s version on Melrose.

I'm reading "Truth and Beauty," by, Ann Patchett. She wrote "The Magician's Assistant" and "Bel Canto". This particular book is non-fiction; about her friendship with writer/poet Lucy Grealy.
I’ll catch up on the summer issues of Martha Stewart lying around, and I think the new fall Vogue, Bazaar and Elle will be out on the magazine stands any day, now. I picked up a paperback copy of Death in Venice which I never read in high school, so I am going to read it this week.

It is 11:15pm and that is late for us at the lake. We stay up late in L.A., but we are really tired by 9pm, generally. So until the next time….sleep with the angels. ST

I understand why you wrote about this lake. My wife and I were in Tahoe 2 weeks ago and fell in love with this little beautiful corner of the world. I hope to go up there in winter to see how beautiful if may be with snow capped hills surrounding it.
