I am excited that my husband built me 4 raised bed/boxes for my backyard. He built them out of redwood. They are four foot squares. 6 inches high. I am going to get out in the garden tomorrow and get my summer harvest going!
The two front beds will be herbs. The two rear will be vegetables.
Here's what goes in one of the rear boxes: Garlic, Shallots, Leeks, "Super Sweet" Onions, Green Onions and,
Potatoes: Red, Dutch Yellow, Russet
The other rear veggie box will have :
Bush Beans, Peas, Japanese Eggplant, Baby Carrots, Radish, Lemon Cucumber, Spinach, Mesclun, Heirloom "Little Gem" Romaine. I plan on installing some vertical structures to support the climbers.
Herbs: Lemon Basil, Olympia Basil, Oregano, Marjoram, Cilantro, Fennel, Italian Flat Leaf Parsley, Curly Leaf Parsley, Dill, Borage.
Tomatoes: Baby Yellow Pear, Speckled Roman, Italian Plum, 100's. And whatever sprouts from years of seeds all over the place!
I'm big on companion planting. Borage, which has a cucumber flavor, repeals spider mites, and everybody seems to hate oregano, so in addition to it being in my herb garden, that is an easy one to add to the tomato and vegetable beds. I like to plant lavender with rosemary and basil. I have roses and hollyhocks on a border bed of the vegetables, and they seem to love the lavender and basil, as well. All of this attracts butterflies and honey bees, which are an important part of our landscape! We have ladybugs and praying mantis to guard against aphids, white fly, etc.
I plant in my front yard, too. Tomatoes, squash, pumpkin, corn, and sunflowers. This year, so far, I'm not planting pumpkin unless it reseeds and grows from last year. My peach tree grew from a pit.
It sounds like a lot, but if you don't plant too much of one thing, it's manageable. I've learned that my neighbors don't get sick of tomatoes left on their porches, but zucchini, not so much!!!
